In 1966, George Springer Jr. opened Speed Print Instant Printing Center on Douglas Avenue in Urbandale, Iowa with one employee, a single color printing press and several cases of copy paper. It was one of the first print centers that boasted “copies while you wait.”
During the first 5 years of operation, two additional locations opened in the Des Moines area. As business prospered, new equipment was added to meet our clients' ever-changing needs. Over time, Speed Print evolved from a storefront copy shop with basic equipment and capabilities into a cutting-edge offset printer.
In 1971, all locations were consolidated under a single roof and began operation under the name of Universal Printing Services. The business was moved in 1975 to a much newer and larger location at 2828 5th Avenue where it remains today. Adjoining property was purchased in 2001 to allow for future growth as needed.
Many things have changed since that first day of operation in 1966, but one thing has not…the ownership has remained locally owned by the Springer family for
over 40 years.
